Beauty and the Beasts, Talapi Alice Springs, March 11

BEAUTY AND THE BEASTS

To the untrained eye, the vast desert landscape in central Australia can appear a lonely, isolated and still place. However, a multitude of creatures, beasts and spirits inhabit the central desert.

In Talapi‘s first exhibition for 2016, we pay homage to the creatures that inhabit these places: the Snakes, ngintaka, emus, owls and budgies that are among the creatures that determine ancestral stories.

From the realm of the imagination, Tiger Yaltangki conjures mamus, friendly spirits and wild animals. Iluwanti Ken’s ancestral story of the hungry eagle devouring small animals to feed her chicks compliments Carlene Thompson’s paintings of plump birds, perfect for the table.

Karen Napaltjarri Barnes’ brightly dappled canvases mimic the flickering of coloured light as flocks of birds race across the sky. Conway Ginger captures the essence creatures in ink and wash on paper and the Ngurratjuta watercolour artists locate their creatures in the magnificent West MacDonnell Ranges.

New works from Hermannsburg Potters and Yarrenyty Arltere will delight with their brightly festooned sculptures.

Exhibition opens 11 March, 6PM.

We are in Wonder LAND – Sydney May 14

The new exhibition “We are in Wonder LAND: New Experimental Art from Central Australia” opens in Sydney on May 14. The exhibition will present landscapes painted by our artists who work in the watercolour tradition of famous Hermannsburg Western Arrarnta artist Albert Namatjira, which have been transformed into stunning 1950’s style circle skirts. The watercolour landscapes, originally created as round works on paper through a workshop at the NT Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Education (BIITE) were scanned by LUXLAB at iGLAM UNSW: Art & Design with a new ultra-high resolution scanner before being printed onto fabric in the USA and tailored in Alice Springs. The skirts will be revealed to Sydney audiences alongside over 70 other artworks as part of the first national exhibition to explore experimentation in contemporary Central and Western Australian desert art.

Artist Gloria Pannka and art worker Marisa Maher will attend the event and have an artist talk during the symposium.

The exhibition will run from May 15 to August 15 at the UNSW Galleries, Paddington Campus, Cnr of Greens Road and Oxford Street, Paddington.

Thank you to all the Pozible campaign supporters!

We would like to send out a big “Thank You” to all the supporters of our Pozible campaign! Without you we wouldn’t have been able to reach our goal. The skirts are now in the production stage with a very clever lady named Bernice Bristow making this happen. All eight designs will be on display at Raft Artspace from may 15 to June 6 so if your in Alice come and take a look at these amazing creations.
