We are in Wonder LAND – Sydney May 14

The new exhibition “We are in Wonder LAND: New Experimental Art from Central Australia” opens in Sydney on May 14. The exhibition will present landscapes painted by our artists who work in the watercolour tradition of famous Hermannsburg Western Arrarnta artist Albert Namatjira, which have been transformed into stunning 1950’s style circle skirts. The watercolour landscapes, originally created as round works on paper through a workshop at the NT Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Education (BIITE) were scanned by LUXLAB at iGLAM UNSW: Art & Design with a new ultra-high resolution scanner before being printed onto fabric in the USA and tailored in Alice Springs. The skirts will be revealed to Sydney audiences alongside over 70 other artworks as part of the first national exhibition to explore experimentation in contemporary Central and Western Australian desert art.
Artist Gloria Pannka and art worker Marisa Maher will attend the event and have an artist talk during the symposium.
The exhibition will run from May 15 to August 15 at the UNSW Galleries, Paddington Campus, Cnr of Greens Road and Oxford Street, Paddington.
